Advanced BroadBand Light® for Clearer, More Even-Looking Skin
BBL® HEROic™ by Sciton is an advanced light treatment designed to improve pigmentation, redness, acne, sun damage and visible signs of skin ageing.
Research led by Stanford University researchers found that BBL can influence how ageing skin behaves at a molecular level. After treatment, the activity of certain genes in older skin shifted towards patterns more commonly seen in younger skin.
In practical terms, BBL is designed to do more than target visible sun damage and uneven tone. Research suggests it may also influence some of the biological processes associated with skin ageing.
What is BBL® HEROic™?
BBL HEROic uses controlled pulses of BroadBand Light to target unwanted colour in the skin.
Different wavelengths can be selected to target brown pigment, such as sun spots and freckles, or redness from small visible blood vessels. The body then gradually clears the targeted pigment or vessels.
HEROic is designed to deliver fast, efficient treatment across both small and larger areas, allowing multiple skin concerns to be addressed in a single session. Its advanced pulse delivery helps achieve consistent results while keeping treatment time relatively short.

What Can BBL HEROic Treat?
Following consultation, BBL HEROic may be used to improve:
Sun spots, freckles and pigmentation
Uneven or dull-looking skin
Facial redness and flushing
Small visible blood vessels
Redness associated with rosacea
Active inflammatory acne
Sun damage and visible signs of ageing
How Does HEROic Improve Treatment?
BBL HEROic uses Skin Positioning System™ (SPS™) to follow the position and movement of the handpiece during treatment.
Intelligent Control (IC) uses this information to coordinate each light pulse, helping your practitioner achieve controlled and consistent coverage across both small and larger areas.
Sapphire cooling is built into the handpiece for comfort. Most patients describe the treatment as brief warmth or a light snapping sensation.
What Happens During a BBL HEROic Appointment?
Your practitioner will first assess your skin, medical history, medications, recent sun exposure and treatment goals.
The appropriate filter and settings are then selected, and the handpiece is passed across the skin to deliver controlled pulses of light.
After treatment, the skin may feel warm or look slightly red or swollen. Brown spots can temporarily become darker before gradually fading. Improvements in skin tone and clarity develop over time.
Broad-spectrum SPF and appropriate skincare are important to protect your skin and help maintain results.

FAQs
-
BBL, or BroadBand Light®, is Sciton's proprietary pulsed-light technology. Like IPL, it uses multiple wavelengths of non-laser light to target specific structures within the skin.
BBL HEROic is Sciton's latest generation of this technology, combining BroadBand Light with intelligent motion tracking and automated pulse placement for more controlled and consistent delivery.
-
BBL HEROic combines Intelligent Control (IC) and Skin Positioning System™ (SPS™) technology to deliver precise, efficient and consistent treatments. Its automated technology helps reduce treatment time, optimises pulse placement to minimise issues such as striping and pulse stacking, and supports greater patient comfort. This allows practitioners to deliver tailored treatments across a range of skin concerns and treatment areas.

Stop Accutane / isotretinoin at least 6 months before treatment.
2–4 weeks before
Avoid sunbathing, tanning beds and intentional sun exposure.

Follow any specific shaving instructions provided for your treatment.
1 week before
Stop fake tan, gradual tanning lotions, bronzers and spray tans.
Around 5 days before
Pause retinoids such as retinol, tretinoin and adapalene.
Pause AHAs and BHAs, including glycolic, salicylic and lactic acids.
Avoid benzoyl peroxide and other irritating active skincare products.
Avoid scrubs, microdermabrasion, exfoliating brushes and other abrasive treatments.
Before your appointment
Tell your practitioner about any recent Botox, neurotoxins, dermal fillers, skin boosters or other injectables in or near the treatment area, as a waiting period may be required.
Avoid chemical peels, microneedling, microdermabrasion or other treatments that may irritate the skin unless approved by your practitioner.
Let us know about all prescription and over-the-counter medicines, supplements, topical treatments and any recent medication changes. Some medicines, including certain antibiotics, can increase sensitivity to light.
Tell your practitioner if you are taking or have recently taken isotretinoin / Accutane. Any required waiting period will depend on the treatment and your individual assessment.
Let us know about any relevant medical or skin conditions, including photosensitivity, cold sores, abnormal scarring or keloids, active infections, rashes, open wounds or recent skin changes.
Please inform us if you are pregnant, planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, as some treatments may need to be postponed.
On the day
Arrive with the treatment area clean and free from makeup, skincare, lotions, oils, perfume, deodorant and other topical products, unless advised otherwise.
Do not apply fake tan or heavily pigmented cosmetic products.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing where appropriate.
For face or neck treatments, consider bringing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses for sun protection afterwards.
Please note: These are general precautions for laser and light-based treatments. Requirements can vary depending on the procedure, technology, treatment area, skin type and medical history. Always follow the specific instructions provided by your practitioner.
-
This depends on your skin concerns and treatment goals. Some patients notice visible improvement after one treatment, while a course of approximately 1–3 sessions may be recommended for more significant pigmentation, redness or photodamage.
Your practitioner will create an individual treatment plan following consultation.
-
Downtime is usually minimal. The skin may appear red or feel warm for a short period after treatment, and mild swelling can occasionally occur.
Areas of pigmentation may temporarily darken before gradually fading. Your practitioner will explain what to expect according to the settings and areas being treated.
-
BBL HEROic treatments can be planned at different times of year, but sun exposure is an important consideration with light-based treatments.
Recent tanning or significant sun exposure may affect whether treatment can safely proceed. Following treatment, direct sun exposure should be avoided and daily broad-spectrum SPF is essential.
Your practitioner will advise on treatment timing based on your individual skin and recent sun exposure.
-
BBL HEROic can be used on the face as well as selected areas of the body, including the neck, décolletage, arms, legs, back, abdomen and buttocks.
The most suitable treatment area will depend on your individual skin concerns and the findings of your clinical assessment.
