Broken Capillaries Treatment

Capillaries are the smallest of a body’s blood vessels and are parts of its microcirculation, connecting arteries and veins, helping to enable the exchange of water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and many other nutrients between blood and the tissues.

Their endothelial linings are only one cell layer thick, measuring 5 to 10 microns in diameter (.005 – .01 mm), so they can be extremely fragile and easily damaged. These tiny vessels may be visible on the skin surface, especially where skin is thin, such as the face. Broken capillaries (known in the medical world as telangiectasia) look like thin red threads on the skin that have a webbed appearance, which is why they are often called spider veins.

Intense pulsed light therapy is also called an IPL because it delivers precise amounts of light energy to specific areas on the skin. The intense flash of light causes minimal skin damage and resembles the flashbulb of a camera. The light passes through the superficial layers of skin and reaches the deep layers. This is where collagen, blood vessels, and pigment are found. When the deeper layers of skin are treated with light energy, they are stimulated to grow new collagen. This reduces fine lines and wrinkles, pore size and the appearance of acne scars and erases broken capillaries on the face.

In most cases, people affected by broken capillaries are older, but anyone above 18 years old can be affected by the condition. They may appear on the face, arms, neck, shoulders, and legs. The good news is that you do not need to live with these unsightly broken capillaries or spider veins any longer.

How it Works

The main goal of an IPL photofacial treatment is to improve the appearance of your skin and leave it looking rejuvenated and more youthful. During a consultation with our specialist, you can learn if your skin problems can be effectively treated with an IPL photofacial. The main conditions IPL photofacial can treat are:

• The redness caused by birthmarks, broken capillaries, and rosacea
• Sun damage, such as sunspots, freckles, and solar lentigines, as well as age spots, melasma, or skin darkening caused by pregnancy or birth control pills
• Rough-textured skin, aging skin, and fine wrinkles

The treatment usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes, and one treatment per month may be required for three to six months depending on the condition and the severity of the condition. In the vast majority of cases, IPL photofacial treatments are very safe. Only the targeted area is treated and the surrounding skin is untouched.

People with fair complexion and sun-damaged skin are the best candidates for IPL photofacial treatments. However, people with tanned or darker skin can also benefit, but the recovery time may be a bit longer since the pigment in the skin may absorb some of the laser light.

After any necessary cleansing of the skin you will be given dark glasses to wear to protect your eyes from the bright light. The smooth surface of the IPL hand-piece is gently applied to your skin and through which pulses of light are emitted. You will feel a slight and sometimes uncomfortable sting as the pulses move over the area we are treating. Depending on the size of the area, it may take 5-20 minutes per treatment.

Depending on the severity of the problem, 3-6 treatment sessions may be recommended, however excellent results can be expected from just one treatment. We prefer you not to exercise 24 hours before or after your treatment. You can return to work the next day and resume all your normal activities however in some cases of excessive sun damage and if you are having a half or full face treatment you may have some swelling for about 3 days after treatment. Immediately after the treatment we recommend you go home and relax with cool compresses on the skin for at least a couple of hours. The skin may even swell the following day and cold cloths may be needed for your comfort. There is no swelling if you are only having a couple of age spots done.

The face has an extreme network of veins and tiny blood vessels called capillaries. Over time ageing, trauma, sun exposure and certain lifestyle factors cause a number of them to break, appearing as red streaks or blotches on the face. The IPL works by heating the broken capillaries and vascular lesions to the point of destruction. As blood can no longer circulate it ceases to colour the capillaries. After the treatment the broken capillaries are re-absorbed by the body within a few days. There is no damage to the surrounding tissue and after 2-4 treatments, depending on the severity of the condition, you can expect virtually all traces of veins to be removed. For any stubborn veins it is best to do the treatments one or two weeks apart as the vein walls weaken with each treatment. You may feel a little sun burnt immediately after your treatment and have mild redness for a couple of hours.

Rosacea is a skin ailment that leaves people red faced from the dilated blood vessels and chronic flushing. Rosacea can also cause blisters or pimples on the nose and cheeks. IPL can successfully treat dilated blood vessels and redness while greatly reducing the episodes of flushing with long-term effectiveness.

In some cases yes, you do need a test patch and we will perform this during your consultation. Our fully trained Intense Pulse Light Skin Rejuvenation Therapist will do both your consultation and treatment.

The IPL treatment to remove broken capillaries works brilliantly on the –

  • Face
  • Chest

Any man or woman with fair to medium complexion. You must not have any fake tan on the skin and preferably have little to no sun tan at all.

ROSACEA

Etherea IPL LASER

The Etherea IPL laser is the gold standard for the treatment of vascular lesions, including any of the following common skin conditions:

• Broken capillaries
• Rosacea
• Red acne scars
• Surgical or burn scars
• Angiomas
• Port wine birth marks

The laser works by delivering an intense but gentle burst of laser light energy onto a selected area of the skin. The laser is of a specific wavelength that is absorbed by blood vessels or pigmented cells but not the surrounding tissue. It treats the vessels being targeted without harming what is around them. No anesthetic is required for the procedure. The epidermis is protected by DCD, an exclusive method that delivers a blast of cooling mist to the treatment area a fraction of a second prior to each light energy pulse.

Downtime is limited to mild redness for a day or two in the area treated. Results may be visible as early as after your first treatment, though they will ultimately depend on each patient’s skin. For those with deeper or more severe vascular lesions, two to five treatment sessions may be required before you see significant results.

IPL PHOTOFACIAL

Another treatment option for broken capillaries and spider veins is our IPL Photofacial. This procedure utilizes Intense Pulsed Light for a gentle treatment that is safe, painless, and requires no significant recovery time. IPL sends light through the skin to target the red or brown undesirable tissue, and leaves the surrounding tissue unharmed.

The process is gradual and therefore, more gentle than traditional laser therapies. The IPL Photofacial treats many skin conditions including:

• Rosacea
• Age spots (liver spots)
• Enlarged pores
• Visible blood vessels
• Unwanted freckles
• Sun damage

The treatment normally takes about five sessions and results begin to appear after one or two sessions. During this process, collagen production is stimulated, rejuvenating the skin, shrinking pores, and filling in fine lines and indentations. The result is healthier, younger looking skin.
