Laser hair removal is selective photothermolysis (SPTL). The crucial element in laser hair removal is matching specific wavelengths of light and pulse duration to the hair target. The hair target is the melanin found in the hair follicle.

Melanin is a naturally occurring pigment in our skin and hair is associated with determining colour. Importantly for safety and comfort, the laser energy is focused and absorbed only into the follicle, thus avoiding the surrounding skin tissue area. This light is specially controlled to remove shorter wavelengths and devised to target specific structures. In hair removal, it is designed to target the melanin pigment in the hairs. The light energy is absorbed, transferring as heat energy which warms the hair, causing damage to the follicle. The process works by destroying the hair root. This prevents blood flow to the follicle, disabling the hair growth long-term.

The level of discomfort varies from person to person, but the sensation can feel quite tingly and hot – it’s sometimes likened to being flicked with a hot elastic band. The process is quite quick, though, so the pain doesn’t last long.

The following are not suitable candidates:

Naturally light blonde, red, white and grey hairs contain little pigment, so IPL typically isn’t as effective on people with these hair shades, whatever their skin colour. They also don’t work on dark skin tones. Typically, those with pale to medium skin and dark hair are the best candidates for IPL.

Note that they aren’t suitable for pregnant women, or those with certain skin/hair conditions, or those undergoing particular treatments. They also don’t work on tattoos or permanent makeup
